Lunar New Year dinner RSVP

Families reply, count kids for red envelopes and claim a dumpling-folding shift.

What's inside

Families who come give a headcount and the number of children for red envelopes, claim a dumpling-folding shift from the places left and pick a hot pot broth. Families who can't come get New Year wishes.

Planning the reunion dinner

Send the link three to four weeks before New Year's Eve. Families travel for reunion dinners, and tickets get expensive close to the date.

The children count tells you how many red envelopes to fill before the night. No child goes home without one, and you're not counting heads at the door.

Folding shifts close at six people each, the number that fits around one table. Change the times or the places to your kitchen.

Celebrating Tết or Seollal? Rename the title, swap hot pot for bánh chưng or tteokguk, and keep the rest. Families who also mark Diwali or Eid will find the Diwali party RSVP and the Eid open house RSVP work the same way.

Lunar New Year RSVP questions

Can I use it for Tết or Seollal?

Yes. Lunar New Year is celebrated as Chinese New Year, Vietnamese Tết and Korean Seollal, among others. Change the title, the dishes and the greeting to your family's. Check the date each year, since it falls between January 21 and February 20. Rename the broth question too, so the choices match what your family cooks, and keep the folding shifts if that is part of your day.

What happens when a folding shift is full?

That shift shows as Full and can't be picked, so the next family chooses from what's left. They can still choose to just eat the dumplings. Each shift has six places, so twelve helpers in total. If more relatives want to help, raise the limit after sharing or add a 4 pm shift. Plan about 15 dumplings per adult when you buy wrappers.

Why ask for children separately?

Red envelopes go to children and unmarried younger relatives. A separate count lets you prepare the right number before the night. Envelopes for elderly parents are a separate custom, so count those yourself. Use new, crisp notes and avoid amounts with a 4, which sounds like the word for death in Chinese. Even amounts such as 8 or 88 are a common choice.
