Throwing an Oktoberfest party
Munich's Oktoberfest runs from late September into the first days of October. Send your link three weeks before your date, so guests can find a dirndl or lederhosen.
Buy food from the answers: about two sausages per guest, with the veggie count set aside. Pretzels go faster than you think, so get one and a half each.
The contest list is your bracket. Hold heats of five, arms straight out, last stein up wins. Keep it to one liter, and water works just as well.
For a bar or club night, change the intro to the venue and delete the veggie count if the kitchen handles orders.
Oktoberfest RSVP questions
How does a stein-holding contest work?
Each player holds a full one-liter stein straight out in front, arm locked. The last one still holding it level wins. Run heats of four or five and a final. A full glass stein weighs a little over 2 kilograms, so most heats last two to five minutes. Have one judge per heat call out bent elbows and dipping steins, since that settles most arguments.
Do guests have to dress up?
No. The tracht question only tells you who's planning to, so you can give a prize for best outfit if enough people say yes. Count the yes answers a few days before. If ten or more plan to come in tracht, a small prize and a group photo make the effort worth it. Keep a box of cheap felt hats by the door for everyone else.
Can I use it for a family-friendly Oktoberfest?
Yes. Fill the steins with water or soda for the contest, and add pretzel-making or a sack race to the intro. Count children in the party size, since one reply covers up to six people. Start earlier, around noon, and run a kids' heat with small plastic mugs so they get their own winner.
