Birthday video message form

Collect every friend's video hello by a deadline, ready to cut into one birthday film.

What's inside

Each person picks how to send their clip: a short one uploads in the form, a longer one comes as a share link, so no video gets stuck.

Getting every clip in on time

Send the link three weeks before the birthday and set the deadline a week early. That week is for editing, and for chasing the cousin who always sends theirs late.

Ask for 20 to 30 seconds per person. Twenty people at 30 seconds makes a 10-minute film, about as long as a room will happily watch at a party.

Phone videos get big fast. Uploads stop at 10 MB, roughly 10 seconds of full-quality phone video, so longer clips come in as a Google Drive, iCloud or Dropbox link. Open each link before the deadline to check it isn't private.

The how-do-you-know-him answers help you order the film: family, then friends, then work, or mixed for pace. Old photos make good title cards between clips.

Birthday video questions

Can people send a video straight from their phone?

Yes. On a phone the upload button opens the camera roll, so a clip under 10 MB goes straight in. Longer clips are shared as a link from the same phone in a few taps. Ask people in the intro to hold the phone sideways and film near a window, so every clip fits the same frame and nobody is lit from behind.

How do I keep the video a surprise?

Send the link one by one or in a group chat without the guest of honour. Everyone ticks that their lips are sealed before sending, which is a small reminder before they mention it at dinner. Check that the guest of honour isn't in any family chat you post it to. Close the form after the deadline, so a forwarded link no longer opens it.

Where do the clips end up?

Each uploaded clip and photo is attached to the sender's reply, and links sit beside their name. Download everything into one folder before you start editing. Rename each file with a number and the sender's name, like 03 Rosa, so your editing app lists the clips in the order you want them to play.
